Unemployment is now hitting IT professions harder than the Swiss market average, with a clear regional shift: the Lake Geneva region has reached 6.54% unemployment in IT, far ahead of northwestern Switzerland (3.95%) and Zurich (3.91%).
This is not an isolated cyclical accident. The IT sector has been going through a turbulent phase since spring 2023: with the arrival of ChatGPT in 2022 and the rise of generative artificial intelligence, job vacancies are becoming scarce while the number of job seekers is increasing. For recruiters, this means a broader pool of experienced candidates, but also more precise expectations regarding the actual mastery of AI tools, not just their theoretical knowledge.
The most concerning signal affects senior profiles: those aged 50-64 have a higher unemployment rate than those aged 25-49 in almost all Swiss regions, with the Lake Geneva region concentrating the most marked gap, at 7.57% compared to 6.35%. A developer or system administrator over 50 is no longer protected by experience alone: they must now prove active use of AI in their field.
For an IT candidate currently employed or job searching in the Lake Geneva region, the priority is no longer to accumulate general certifications, but to document concrete and measurable use cases: automation of scripts, AI-assisted code review, accelerated network diagnostics.
This week: list three repetitive tasks from your current job that you could delegate to an AI tool, test one, and add the quantified result (time saved, errors avoided) in the "achievements" section of your LinkedIn profile.
LinkedIn post idea to adapt: "I automated [task X] with [AI tool] this week. Result: [quantified time/quality gain]. Here’s what it changes for my role as [job]." For a trainer: propose to your IT learners an exercise where they must quantify the time saved using an AI tool on a task from their internship, then formulate it in a sentence for a CV or professional profile.
