IT unemployment stands at 6.54% among professionals in the Lake Geneva region, compared with less than 4% in the rest of Switzerland: the gap has become a warning signal for the entire tech sector.
A market fragmenting by region and age
Since spring 2023, the IT sector has been going through a period of turbulence. The Lake Geneva region is by far the hardest hit, reaching 6.54% unemployment, well ahead of the next regions, northwestern Switzerland (3.95%) and Zurich (3.91%). Another notable fact: people aged 50–64 have a higher unemployment rate than those aged 25–49 in every region except the Mittelland area, with a particularly pronounced gap in French-speaking Switzerland.
What this changes for candidates and recruiters
For IT professionals, geographical location and age now carry as much weight as the technical stack they master. The arrival of ChatGPT in 2022 and the rise of generative artificial intelligence have led to fewer vacancies while the number of jobseekers has increased. Recruiters, meanwhile, must work with a pool of experienced senior candidates who are less mobile towards high-demand areas, while tech companies continue to seek highly specific profiles.
For a candidate over 50 in the Lake Geneva region, the job-search strategy must change: broaden the geographical area covered by applications, target positions in the Mittelland region or Zurich, where the generational gap is less pronounced, and document recent skills (cloud, AI, cybersecurity) very precisely to counter age bias on the CV.
This week: if you are actively looking for IT work in French-speaking Switzerland, expand your job alerts to two additional regions (Mittelland, Zurich) and add a visible line to your LinkedIn profile mentioning a skill acquired in the past 12 months.
