The Swiss labor market is showing more pronounced signs of strain than its European neighbors.
Switzerland’s unemployment rate according to the International Labour Organization rose from 4.7% to 5.1%, a sharper increase than in the European Union, where the unemployment rate also rose in the third quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, but by a much smaller amount, from 5.8% to 5.9%. This context is notably linked to a significant increase amid 39% US tariffs on Swiss products weighing on the labor market.
- The ILO rate enables more precise international comparisons than Seco statistics.
- Export-oriented sectors remain the most exposed to this trend.
