In the United States, AI becomes a reason for anticipated layoffs

Several US companies, including Amazon and the Gemini platform, are citing artificial intelligence to justify waves of layoffs, sometimes before productivity gains have even been measured.

In the United States, AI becomes a reason for anticipated layoffs

Layoff announcements have multiplied among US companies, with artificial intelligence increasingly cited as a justification.

The cryptocurrency exchange platform Gemini said it would part with nearly a quarter of its employees, partly because AI makes it possible to absorb some of the tasks. Amazon, for its part, announced the elimination of 16,000 jobs worldwide after its CEO Andy Jassy said that the development of AI would reduce office headcount in the coming years. An initial wave of 14,000 cuts had already taken place a few months earlier.

For employees in administrative roles, the signal is clear: the AI argument is now being used to justify restructuring decisions made in anticipation, even before productivity gains have been fully measured.
