Employees more optimistic than five years ago about AI’s impact on employment

A barometer surveying 12,900 employees, managers, and executives in 18 countries shows growing optimism about AI’s impact on employment, but with marked differences between France and the global average, and between executives and employees.

Employees more optimistic than five years ago about AI’s impact on employment

Optimism about AI is growing, but remains highly uneven depending on hierarchical position and country.

Five years after an initial barometer conducted in 2018, a new edition surveyed 12,900 employees, managers, and executives in more than 18 countries, including France. Employees are more optimistic than five years ago: one in two says they are optimistic about AI’s impact on employment, 17 points higher than in 2018. People in France are more concerned than the average (41% compared with 30% worldwide). Executives, who use generative AI more frequently, are the most optimistic: 62% say they are optimistic, compared with only 42% of employees.

This optimism gap directly mirrors the usage gap: the more people work hands-on with generative AI tools, the more their perception of risk decreases.
